San Francisco 49ers Brandon Aiyuk Has ‘A Chance’ to Be Ready for Week 1

Posted on July 12, 2025

This week, fans of the San Francisco 49ers got some shred of hope in the form of the condition of one of the team’s stars, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Having torn his ACL and MCL in October 2024, Aiyuk has been a hot topic as to whether he will be available at the beginning of the 2025 NFL season or not. Although the trend remains that it is expected that he will enter the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP list, which would sit him out a minimum of four games), there is a cautious optimism that he may get into gear to take the field on Week 1.

Encouraging Signs in Brandon Aiyuk’s Recovery

His condition was positive according to the update made by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, who revealed, “I hear he’s doing really well. I hear that the knee is even ahead of schedule.” This reflects the other comments given by 49ers general manager John Lynch, who has constantly been complimentary of Brandon Aiyuk’s work ethic and the speed of his rehabilitation. As Lynch has stressed, elite athletes such as Aiyuk tend to heal much faster than anticipated, and the team is satisfied with his devotion to the process.

The Team’s Cautious Approach

In all the good news, the 49ers organization is still sticking to the conservative approach. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has reported that Aiyuk will be unavailable when the training camp commences on July 22. It is the focus of the team not to see any setbacks, although there is a possibility that Aiyuk would be fit to play by the opening September 7 game against the Seattle Seahawks.“They want to be extra cautious with him,” Maiocco explained.

“Even though the timeline might point toward, hey, there’s a chance Week 1, I think the feeling inside the organization has always been don’t take any chances, start him off on PUP, and then more than likely, just have that carry over into the regular season”.

What’s Next for Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers?

The latest news is certainly encouraging, even though Brandon Aiyuk is unlikely to play at least the first four games. He actually has a chance to come back as early as Week 5 or Week 6, and his recovery does appear to be ahead of schedule, as indicated after surgery. The outlining issue will be the pace at which he can regain his form before the injury and become one of the outstanding weapons in the league.

At this point, 49ers fans can take comfort in the fact that Aiyuk’s recovery is trending in the right direction, while unlikely, a week 1 return isn’t off the table, yet.
