Coco Gauff breaks silence on what she told her team after Aryna Sabalenka’s demeaning Roland Garros remarks

In the aftermath of Coco Gauff’s landmark victory over Aryna Sabalenka at the 2025 French Open, tensions briefly flared when Sabalenka made comments questioning Gauff’s performance. Sabalenka suggested her own errors — not Gauff’s level of play — were the primary reason for her defeat. These remarks, perceived by many as diminishing Gauff’s achievement, understandably garnered strong reactions.

Despite being surprised — “a bit more surprised about” the tone and timing — Gauff chose a composed and empathetic stance. “It was a terrible condition day,” Gauff told her team. She acknowledged the windy, adverse conditions affected both players and understood that Sabalenka, upset with herself, was expressing frustration rather than disrespect.

That understanding didn’t stop Gauff’s competitive instinct. She admitted she considered firing back — especially since Sabalenka’s apology was not immediate. Even so, she emphasized her desire not to fuel negativity. “I didn’t want to fuel more hate. I’m not the person that will fuel hate in the world,” she declared, recounting discussions with her coaching circle about whether to respond publicly.

Gauff’s team had a clear directive: if Sabalenka offered an apology — public or private — Gauff would accept and move forward. Sabalenka did write and then later apologize again in person before a practice session, which Gauff gratefully accepted. “It was just water under the bridge,” Gauff reflected. She stressed that their relationship had always been positive before this incident and that she believes Sabalenka didn’t intend to offend her.

Ahead of Wimbledon 2025, Gauff stayed true to her message of unity. At her pre‑tournament press conference, she said, “I preach love, I preach light,” expressing hope that both media and fans would let the matter go. She even brought a stuffed toy strawberry named “Strawb” onto the stage, symbolizing reconciliation and a lighter spirit to diffuse continued negativity.

The two went further by posting a TikTok dance together on Wimbledon’s Centre Court — a playful gesture that showcased renewed camaraderie. Their ability to shift from on‑court rivals to friendly peers underscores Gauff’s maturity and composure at just 21.

Sports analysts have praised this episode as more than a PR move — it’s a genuine commitment to sportsmanship in a high‑pressure world. Many see this as the beginnings of a compelling rivalry that echoes the dynamics of past great duels in women’s tennis .

Looking ahead, Gauff and Sabalenka will each attempt deep runs at Wimbledon, with momentum anchored in this show of mutual respect. Gauff appears focused on her game, determined to carry forward lessons from Paris without carrying personal baggage.
