“That Play Wasn’t Working”: Travis Kelce, Matt Nagy Pokes Fun At Chris Jones ‘Swinging D’ Play

Posted on July 12, 2025

Travis Kelce has never shied away from cracking jokes—especially when it comes to his teammates. And on a recent episode of his New Heights podcast, the Kansas City Chiefs star had fans in stitches as he and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy recalled a failed experiment involving Chris Jones… as a quarterback.

Known for their wild offensive creativity under head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs have never been afraid to try something bold. But sometimes, even the most inventive ideas don’t pan out—especially when they involve a 6-foot-6, 310-pound defensive lineman throwing a pass.

During the podcast, Travis Kelce asked Nagy if there’s ever a play too ridiculous for the Chiefs’ playbook. That’s when Nagy brought up an unforgettable attempt featuring Jones under center.

“Even to the point, Kelce, you know. We put that play in for Chris Jones that we had him doing a little bit of a pass,” Nagy said.

Of course, Travis Kelce jumped right in.

“Jason, you have no idea,” Kelce told his brother. “This s**t was—it was bad. Dude, I love Chris Jones to death. I don’t know what it was, but he needs to stay on the defensive side.”

Nagy revealed that the play was called “Swinging D”—a nod to past trick plays like Dontari Poe’s famous jump pass.

“We put it in for him, and we had him doing a little throw… This one was called ‘Swinging D’ and man, that play wasn’t working,” Nagy laughed.

“It had the name, it had the reference,” Kelce added. “We ran it, it was a throw to me, every single throw was like five yards behind me, at my feet, I’m just like coach, I don’t think this is gonna work.”

Chris Jones Wants Travis Kelce to Stick Around for the Long Haul

Despite the failed trick play, Chris Jones remains one of the NFL’s top defenders—and he’s not ready to see Travis Kelce hang it up just yet.

“He’s got like four or five more years (left), and what is he talking about, right?” Jones said. “We can’t let TK go. … We’ve got to retire together. Give me at least six, four years, then we’ll talk about it.”

Kelce, now entering another season with the Chiefs after falling short in last year’s Super Bowl against the Eagles, remains the heart of Kansas City’s offense. And if Jones has anything to say about it, fans will be seeing Travis Kelce on the field—and the podcast mic—for years to come.
